Saxifrage - Years of experience against kidney stones

Having kidney stones is a usually sharp, spasmodic pain starting from the waist, which can cause nausea and vomiting. There may be several reasons for the formation of kidney stones: too little fluid intake, certain eating habits and obesity also favor stone formation, in addition to some drugs and high Vitamin C and D intake also increases the risk. The main component of kidney stones is the calcium salt of hydrochloric acid (calcium oxalate), but uric acid and magnesium phosphate can also crystallize, so foods high in purine can also contribute to the growth of stones.

The saxifrage is a small 30-60 cm plant, which is native to tropical and subtropical regions, can be found in the Amazonas through India to China, and the most commonly used plants in traditional medicine when it comes to kidney complaints, kidney stones or gall stones. Thus, it is no coincidence that in many languages it is called literally ‘stone breaker’ (Spanish: chanca piedra, Portuguese: quebra-pedra , Latin: saxifraga , Hungarian: kőtörő-fű, etc.) Many species of saxifrage are known, one of the best researched being Phyllanthus niruri, which also includes Phyllanthus amarus.

Saxifrage contains many alkaloids, flavonoids and so-called triterpenes, thanks to which it can support the body on several aspects.

It is used

  • to relieve pain caused by kidney stones
  • to reduce the size of existing stones,
  • to help passing blasted stones, and
  • to prevent re-formation of stones.

When consuming saxifrage, it needs to be considered

Other observations suggest that taking it in larger amounts may lead to mild diarrhea, so in some cases it is also used by people with constipation.

Depending on the individual sensitivity, saxifrage preparations may cause nausea, in which case it is advisable to reduce the amount taken, and if the symptoms do not go away, even to stop taking it.

Because saxifrage can affect smooth muscles, it is not recommended for consumption during pregnancy because it is thought to increase the risk of miscarriage. The effect of saxifrage extract on children is also unexplored, and in the absence of evidence-based studies, it is not recommended for children.

Effects of saxifrage in the clinic and research

The risk of developing kidney stones affects a significant portion of the population. Kidney stones are typically diagnosed when they are as big as 5-10 mm in size, while after the formation of a kidney stone of at least 5 mm, there may be a 20% chance that surgery will be needed in the next 3 years and a 40% chance of painful renal colic.

Science

The kidney stone-dissolving effect has been demonstrated and confirmed in several independent clinical studies. Examining kidney stone treated patients concluded that the saxifrage and its leaf extracts, which contain more concentrated active ingredients, reduced the size of the formed stones after 3-6 months of use and greatly supported the passing of the shock-wave-treated stones from the kidney.

The relief of kidney pain associated with kidney stone is attributed to its relaxing and antispasmodic effect on smooth muscle, although smaller stones can pass more easily by relaxing the renal tubule. It can also inhibit the crystallization of the main constituent of kidney stones, oxalic acid (hydrochloric acid), so the formation of newer stones.

Based on folk observations, many are investigating the liver protection effect of saxifrage. Fatty degeneration of the liver, i.e. fatty liver (disease), can occur as a result of abnormal obesity, or it can also occur in the case of malnutrition or alcoholism.

The correlation is examined by a number of studies, including experimental rats on high-fat diet or on additional supplement to their diet with alcohol and heated sunflower oil, where the blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels increased, along with the deterioration of liver function (ALT, ALP and AST blood levels also increased), so liver fibrosis started to develop.

However, in animals that were also fed with saxifrage, all of these negative effects were significantly reduced or inhibited.

Saxifrage can also alleviate the liver-damaging effects of drugs, e.g. in mice in the case of excessive aspirin or paracetamol intake it supported a normal liver function.
